Christine Brown and Meri Brown discussed the breakdown of Meri’s relationship with Kody Brown during the November 1 episode of Sister Wives, marking their first one-on-one conversation since Christine left the plural family.
Christine, who separated from Kody in November 2021, said her departure process felt different from Meri’s experience. She suggested that Kody had allowed Meri’s relationship with him to continue without being direct about its future.
Meri said Kody had not clearly communicated with her and recalled agreeing to a legal divorce in 2014 while believing their relationship would improve. The divorce took place after Kody spiritually married Robyn Brown and was intended to make it easier for him and Robyn to legally adopt her three children from a previous marriage.
Meri said Kody treated her well for only about a month after the divorce. She remained spiritually married to him until January 2023, when she announced their breakup and was later granted a spiritual divorce.
Christine described the 2014 legal divorce as the start of the relationship’s “real crumbling.” Although she acknowledged that Meri acted with good intentions for the benefit of the family, Christine said she believed the idea may have been encouraged by Kody and Robyn through earlier conversations about similar situations in their religious community.
Christine recalled hearing Robyn describe another plural wife’s decision to legally divorce her husband so he could marry a new wife with children. She said the conversation made her wonder whether Kody and Robyn were trying to persuade Meri to take the same step. Janelle Brown agreed that more may have been happening behind the scenes than Kody and Robyn acknowledged.
Meri said she remains uncertain whether there was a specific plan, but acknowledged that the outcome benefited Kody. She added that she would have handled the divorce differently if she had remained legally married to him.
Robyn is still married to Kody, although she and Kody are no longer part of the show. Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
