Burger King is responding to online criticism after a viral video showed a white employee wearing dark makeup across her face while working the drive-thru on Halloween. The footage prompted accusations of blackface and widespread outrage.
In the video, a customer confronts the employee about her appearance. The worker appears not to understand why the costume is offensive and reportedly defends it by saying blackface is not bad “as long as you have a good heart.”
Burger King said in a statement that it is aware of the video and “take[s] the matter very seriously.” The company added that the franchisee operating the location is addressing the incident with its team, manager and the employee involved to ensure they understand why the conduct was unacceptable and does not happen again.
Burger King has not identified the location where the incident occurred. It also remains unclear whether the employee faced disciplinary action.
