Andy Richter has recalled that much of the 2003 Christmas film “Elf” was filmed inside Riverview Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Coquitlam, British Columbia, that was still partly operating at the time.

Richter, who played children’s book writer Morris, told Us Weekly that the production used several empty wings for locations including the Hobbs family home, offices and a mailroom. He said patients remained in another wing of the hospital.

The comedian said the production used the facility because studio space was limited, partly because a “big vampire movie” was also filming there. Richter added that he kept to the set, his trailer and the production van between scenes.

He recalled that Will Ferrell, who played Buddy the Elf, was more visible around the hospital in his character’s costume. Richter wondered what patients might have thought when they saw Ferrell in his elf outfit.

Richter also said Zooey Deschanel nearly missed out on the role of Jovie. He recalled hearing from Deschanel that Selma Blair had been considered, while Deschanel later said Katie Holmes was offered the part but could not take it because of a scheduling conflict. Deschanel said her singing experience helped suit her to the character.
