Andrew Garfield says he prayed to his late mother shortly before his widely shared 2021 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he spoke about grief and losing her.

In a GQ Men of the Year cover interview published Wednesday, November 4, Garfield recalled being in his dressing room with his father and brother when someone from Colbert’s team asked if he was comfortable discussing his mother. He said he considered the request and agreed because he trusted Colbert to approach the subject with care.

Before going onstage, Garfield said, he prayed and asked his mother to guide what he would say. “Whatever you want me to say, whatever you don’t want me to say, just use me,” he recalled telling her. He described the interview itself as spontaneous.

Garfield’s mother died in 2019 after battling pancreatic cancer. During the 2021 interview, he described grief as an expression of the love he continued to feel for her. He told GQ that people still share the clip with others who have lost someone, saying he had received messages about it as recently as the day before the interview was published.

Garfield also discussed his upcoming film Artificial, in which he portrays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and his concerns about artificial intelligence’s influence, according to the report.
