Abdul El-Sayed used his victory rally in Michigan early Wednesday to address both Mike Rogers, his opponent in the Senate race, and Vice President JD Vance, one of his vocal critics. The race had been called in El-Sayed’s favor after a close contest, according to the report.

El-Sayed wished Rogers well in retirement in Florida, referring to his house and two yachts, then said: “You chose hate, and Michigan chose hope. May we never have to see the likes of you again.” Rogers had not delivered a concession speech at the time of publication.

Turning to Vance, El-Sayed remarked on the irony that the vice president is constitutionally obligated to swear him into the Senate in January. He also invoked the rivalry between their universities, saying, “Wolverines 1 — Buckeyes 0.” El-Sayed attended the University of Michigan; Vance attended The Ohio State University.

Media reports had put El-Sayed’s winning margin at about seven points. He will serve a six-year term and, according to the report, will need to work with Republicans to pass legislation.
