Abdul El-Sayed, a 42-year-old epidemiologist and Democratic candidate, is projected to have won Michigan’s U.S. Senate race against Republican Mike Rogers. The contest was for the seat being vacated by Democrat Gary Peters.

If confirmed, El-Sayed’s victory would make him the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, the report says. The race was closely watched as one of the contests that could determine control of the Senate.

El-Sayed’s campaign priorities included reducing the influence of money in politics, improving household finances and passing Medicare for All. He also campaigned on affordable housing, clean air and water, accessible education, and a foreign policy focused on diplomacy and justice.
